HISTORY OF SRI LANKA

Parts of the country were then colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands in the 16th century after which it surrendered to the British Empire in 1815. Following several years of British rule, in the early 20th century, a nationalist political movement arose in the country which fought for political independence. This was eventually granted, following peaceful negotiations, 1948.
